What is Tsurushi Hina?

Tsurushi Hina (hanging decorations) originated in the Edo period. At that time, traditional tiered Hina dolls were too expensive for common people. Instead, they made small dolls using scraps of silk fabrics like Kinran, Yuzen, and Chirimen, and hung them to celebrate the birth of a girl. Some families would hang them on both sides of a Hina doll display. (In the restaurant “Funamata,” you can even find unique “Eel” Tsurushi Hina!) Common motifs include the twelve zodiac signs, fruits, vegetables, and babies.

Inside the traditional restaurant Funamata, you’ll even find a surprising display of hanging dolls shaped like eels!

These hanging dolls feature a variety of motifs, such as the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac, fruits, vegetables, and infants.
